Consumes 1 million gallons of water, posing sustainability and resource management concerns.

3. Expensive Infrastructure:
Needs specialized facilities, increasing initial setup costs and maintenance expenses.

4. Limited Accessibility:
Likely only accessible to governments, research institutions, or large corporations due to its cost and scale.

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and a member of President Donald Trump’s cabinet, is known for investing in innovative and futuristic sectors, and today a ‘startup’ of his is under discussion, a new project that he has created to enter the world of artificial intelligence.

XAI was launched in the middle of last year and is believed by Elon Musk and other market experts to have the potential to revolutionize the field of artificial intelligence.

It is said that XAI vs. OpenAI is a competition that many people are comparing to the competition between Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Microsoft CEO Bill Gates.

However, this company revolves around the world’s most powerful supercomputer colossus, about which mystery still exists a year after the company was founded.

Today, the cost of this company is said to be $ 50 billion. It should be remembered that Musk bought Twitter (now X) for $44 billion.

Although the company is not yet publicly listed, its share price in the US pre-IPO market is very encouraging and people are eager to invest in this modern-day miracle.

However, the process of creating Colossus is considered an important milestone for the community working in artificial intelligence.

When Musk founded the company, he said that the reason for this was ‘to find out what the real world is like.’

The mission statement on XAI’s website states that ‘XAI is a company that is trying to improve artificial intelligence and accelerate the pace of scientific discoveries so that we can learn more about this universe.’

Musk has said in several interviews that he founded the company because he was worried about the harms of the uncontrolled use of artificial intelligence.

The XAI supercomputer's innovative design enables it to conduct research related to artificial intelligence. Using machine learning and neural networks, Colossus will be used to train language models (such as OpenAI's GPT series) and the framework will be used for machines, robots and scientific simulations.

Colossus was launched in Memphis, Tennessee in September 2024. However, its mystery still persists. The data center is located at the former Electrolux Manufacturing (Appliances) site located in the South Memphis Industrial Park in the United States.

The site has been approved by the Tennessee State Energy Regulatory Commission to generate more than 100 megawatts of electricity.

When it’s running at full capacity, the local utility says it will need 1 million gallons of water a day to keep it cool and 150 megawatts of electricity to power its energy needs, enough to power 100,000 homes for a year.

The facility, located in a remote area of southern Tennessee, is a secret data center that rivals are eager to learn about to see if it can do all it claims.

The server in the compound was allowed to visit a website called “TheHome.com,” giving the world its first look at the supercomputer.

The Colossus system is equipped with 100,000 Nvidia H100 graphics processing units (GPUs), making it one of the world’s most important AI training platforms.

However, it will be surprising to know that they were installed in just 19 days because Elon Musk wants to bring this company up to par with its competitors as soon as possible. While this entire compound was completed in just 122 days.

After installing these 100,000 GPUs, XAI's computing capacity had increased significantly and this created the capacity to solve difficult questions.

This speed and efficiency are necessary because due to the size and complexity of AI models, they are given a very large number of data sets and during this time a lot of computational power is required.

In late November, XAI announced that it was doubling its capacity under a new deal.

The company plans to raise $6 billion in capital over the coming years, much of it expected to come from Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds.

This has been met with criticism, as some believe that foreign investment in AI technology can have geopolitical risks, especially when it has a role in practical things other than research.

This will increase the number of GPUs installed in Colossus from 100,000 to 200,000. The upgrade will use Nvidia’s new Blackwell H200 GPU, which is considered more powerful than the previous model.

Colossus is different from other supercomputers in that it is designed to perform artificial intelligence-related computing. It has the ability to meet the specific needs of AI training.

The company did not share any information about this, but local media has repeatedly reported that Dell Technologies and Supermicro have partnered with XAI to build it.

But what is the company going to do with such a powerful machine? The GROC family of language models is the main goal of XAI. These models, like OpenAI's GPT series, have the ability to create objects in human language.

In addition to language models, XA also wants to do driverless cars, robotics and scientific simulations.

The company is investing in science through AI to find new materials, save energy and invent new medicines.

Inside the Colossus there is also a 'cooling system' that allows the GPUs to work sustainably and in the best weather. This is important because a GPU generates a lot of heat.

It's not that the Colossus doesn't have its problems; keeping such a large supercomputer cool is also a headache, especially at a time when climate change and sustainable energy are among the biggest issues facing the world.
